When is the shim needed? I can understand that the surface of the flywheel will essentially be moved towards the engine the amount of the resurfacing, but I don't see how the little amount will make any difference.

At first, I thought that is was bearing noise, but now I am wondering if there is some engine noise too, caused by the resurfaced flywheel. Damn.. this is really upsetting.

The only time you should have to buy a new flywheel is if the old one can no longer be resurfaced because it was done once already or it is badly warped or you plan on replacing it with a lighter unit.
