When my XJ had death wobble it was caused by the pitman arm. I'm not sure how it happened, maybe it was loose for awhile and the splines got worn or it was metal fatigue but no matter how much I tightened it I couldn't get the play out of it, the nut was bottomed out and the arm still had play in it.
