This technique is a more traditional way of initiating an arc. The initiation process entails “flicking” tungsten (almost molten) over the metal till the arc forms. This starting process works quite well and enables practically all DC stick welders to convert into TIG welders easily.

It was really easy to scratch start compared to what I remember from the 300SS, and it only has about 5V on the output in lift-scratch, much like my 400 GMS. The 400SMT has a different remote connector that I haven't yet researched to build a remote cable.

WebMar 8, 2024 · Scratch TIG is possible with the new Stickmate units but the hot start circuit in place for stick welding could cause irregular starting issues as well as welding issues as a result of a contaminated tungsten. These are always issues that one will have to deal with when TIG welding from a stick unit that does not have an actual TIG setting. Keith
