I would like to make a character focused on necromancy or elemental skills. Any suggestions? Elemental is very strong. As u/hfgm10 pointed out, just play how you want and experiment - the game allows for it graciously with all the pots thrown at you. Any build succeeds in this game, even at CM difficulty; some are just more efficient at clearing a level faster than other builds.
